Multiply and Divide Fractions

Multiply numerators together and denominators together. So 2/3 * 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2. The lab does this directly and shows the result as a decimal so you can verify, like 0.5 for the example above.

Slide a, b, c, d to set the two fractions a/b and c/d. The lab shows product (a*c)/(b*d) and quotient (a*d)/(b*c) as decimals. Try 1/2 divided by 1/4 to see the answer 2, since dividing by a fraction is multiplying by its reciprocal.

If you have 3/4 kg of besan and each ladoo needs 1/8 kg, how many ladoos can you make? Divide 3/4 by 1/8 to get 6 ladoos. The lab does the same kind of division for any pair of fractions in real time.

Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal (flipped fraction). So 2/3 divided by 4/5 equals 2/3 * 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6. The lab shows both operations side by side so the link is visible: divide by c/d, multiply by d/c.
