Frequently asked questions

▶How do I compare two ratios like 3:4 and 6:8?

Convert each ratio to a decimal by dividing the first number by the second. 3:4 = 0.75 and 6:8 = 0.75, so they are equal. The lab does this division and tells you which ratio is larger or if they are equivalent.

▶How do I use the ratio comparator lab?

Slide a, b, c and d between 1 and 50. The lab shows a/b and c/d as decimals next to each other. Try a:b = 2:3 versus c:d = 5:7 to see 0.667 vs 0.714, so 5:7 is the larger ratio.

▶How are ratios used in Indian cricket scores?

Run rate is a ratio of runs to overs. If India scores 240 in 40 overs, the rate is 240:40 = 6 runs per over. Comparing 6:1 with the target rate of 8:1 tells you if India is on track. The lab does this kind of side-by-side check.

▶Ratio vs fraction: are they the same?

A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind, like 3 boys to 5 girls, written 3:5. A fraction shows a part of a whole, like 3/8 of the class. Numerically the ratio 3:5 can be written as the fraction 3/5, but the meaning is slightly different in a word problem.
