Frequently asked questions

How do we add two decimals?

Line up the decimal points one below the other. Add the numbers like normal, keeping the point in the same column. So 2.45 plus 3.7 becomes 2.45 plus 3.70, which is 6.15.

How do I use the decimal adder?

Pick two decimals with the sliders. The lab lines them up with the decimal points stacked, adds column by column, and shows the answer in clear digits.

When do we add decimals in life?

If you buy fruit for 45.50 rupees and biscuits for 22.75 rupees, the total is 68.25 rupees: decimal addition. Mixing 1.5 litres and 0.75 litres of milk also uses it.

Tip for decimal addition

If one number has fewer decimal places, add zeros at the end to make them the same length. So 2.5 becomes 2.50 to add with 1.35. Lining up the points stops silly errors.
