Frequently asked questions
▶What are tenths and hundredths?
Tenths are pieces when one whole is cut into 10 equal parts; each piece is 0.1. Hundredths are pieces of 100; each is 0.01. So 0.3 is 3 tenths, and 0.07 is 7 hundredths.
▶How do I build a decimal in this lab?
Use one slider for tenths and another for hundredths. The lab shows shaded squares on a 10 by 10 grid and writes the decimal. For 0.45, you shade 4 tenths plus 5 hundredths.
▶When do we use decimals?
Your height may be 1.35 metres. Petrol price could be 102.50 rupees per litre. A cricket bowler's average is shown as 24.6. Decimals are common in shop bills and sports.
▶Tip for reading decimals
Read the whole number, say point, then read the digits after the point one by one. So 2.45 is two point four five, not two point forty five. This avoids confusion.
