Frequently asked questions
▶What is a mixed number?
A mixed number is a whole number with a fraction next to it, like 2 and 1/2. It means you have 2 whole pieces and one half. It is another way to show numbers bigger than 1.
▶How do I use the mixed number maker?
Pick an improper fraction like 7/3 using the sliders. The lab turns it into a mixed number, showing 2 and 1/3. You can also see whole pies and a leftover slice for the fraction.
▶When do we use mixed numbers?
Recipes say 1 and 1/2 cups of milk. A piece of cloth may be 2 and 1/4 metres long. Saying 1 and 1/2 hours of homework feels more natural than saying 3/2 hours.
▶Tip to change improper to mixed
Divide the top by the bottom. The quotient is the whole number, the remainder is the new top, and the bottom stays the same. So 11/4 is 2 and 3/4 because 11 divided by 4 is 2 remainder 3.
