Frequently asked questions
▶What is a bead string counter?
A bead string has red and blue beads in a row, and you count them to find the total. It helps you see numbers as a group of two colours, so 4 red plus 3 blue makes 7 beads.
▶How do I use this bead counter?
Move one slider to choose how many red beads, and another for blue beads. The string on screen updates to show that many beads. The total is shown at the side as you slide.
▶When is this idea useful?
Many Indian homes have a counting frame or abacus with colourful beads. Stringing flowers for a garland or jasmine mala is also like counting beads in a row. Even the rosary your grandparents use works this way.
▶Tip for counting beads
Group the beads in fives or tens to count faster. Instead of saying 1, 2, 3 up to 20, count in fives: 5, 10, 15, 20. This trick works for stones, sweets, and chocolates too.
