Frequently asked questions
▶What is counting on?
Counting on means you start from a number, like 4, and then keep counting forward: 5, 6, 7. You do not begin from 1 every time. It is a faster way to add small numbers in your head.
▶How do I use this lab?
Pick a starting number using the first slider. Then choose how many more steps to count. The screen shows each new number as you jump forward, one at a time.
▶When is counting on useful?
If you already have 5 toffees and Didi gives you 3 more, you do not start from 1. You start at 5 and count 6, 7, 8. The same trick works while counting coins in your piggy bank.
▶Quick tip for counting on
Always say the starting number softly in your head first, then say the next numbers out loud. This helps you not lose track. With practice, you will count on faster than you can clap.
