Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on a price?

For GST-exclusive prices, the GST amount equals price times rate divided by 100, and the final price is price plus GST. ₹1,000 at 18 percent GST means ₹180 tax and ₹1,180 total. For GST-inclusive prices, the base equals inclusive divided by (1 plus rate divided by 100), so ₹1,180 inclusive at 18 percent gives ₹1,000 base and ₹180 GST.

Is GST 18 percent on every product?

No. India has multiple GST slabs: 0 percent on essentials like fresh milk and vegetables, 5 percent on household needs and transport, 12 percent on processed foods and some services, 18 percent on most goods and services, and 28 percent on luxury items, cars and tobacco. Some categories like petrol and alcohol are outside GST entirely.

How is CGST and SGST split?

For intra-state sales (buyer and seller in the same state), GST is split equally between Central GST and State GST. An 18 percent bill becomes 9 percent CGST plus 9 percent SGST. For inter-state sales, the entire 18 percent is charged as IGST and shared between Centre and State later. The total tax paid by the buyer is the same.

Inclusive versus exclusive GST: which does a shop show?

Retail price tags (MRP) are always GST-inclusive by law, so you do not add tax at the till. Wholesale invoices, B2B quotes, and restaurant menus often show GST-exclusive prices and add tax separately at the bottom. Always check the line that says inclusive of taxes or plus GST.

Can I claim back the GST I paid?

Only if you are a registered GST business buying for business use : then you can claim input tax credit. As an end consumer the GST you pay is final. Even businesses cannot claim GST on personal items, food bills, or items in the negative list. Rules shown here are illustrative; consult a CA for filing.

Why does my restaurant bill show 5 percent GST instead of 18 percent?

Standalone restaurants charge 5 percent GST without input tax credit. Restaurants inside hotels with room rents above ₹7,500 per night charge 18 percent. So a ₹500 meal in a regular restaurant becomes ₹525, while the same meal in a luxury hotel becomes ₹590. Slab rates can change in future budgets, so values shown are illustrative.
