Frequently asked questions
▶How does currency conversion work?
Converted amount equals source amount times exchange rate. If 1 USD equals ₹95, then 100 USD equals ₹9,500 and ₹10,000 equals 10000 divided by 95, about 105.26 USD. Exchange rates change every second during market hours, so any quoted rate is a snapshot. This calculator pulls a live daily reference rate on load and displays the timestamp : still check your bank's rate before actually transacting.
▶Why is the airport rate worse than the Google rate?
The mid-market rate (what Google or XE shows) is the wholesale price between banks. Airports, hotels, and money changers add a 3 to 8 percent margin plus a fixed fee, so you actually receive less. For a ₹1,00,000 conversion, that margin can cost ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 : book a forex card from a bank a day ahead to avoid it.
▶What is the buy rate versus sell rate?
The buy rate is what the dealer pays you to buy your foreign currency; the sell rate is what they charge when selling foreign currency to you. The sell rate is always higher : the gap (the spread) is the dealer's profit. A typical spread on USD to INR is 1 to 3 percent at banks and 5 to 8 percent at airports.
▶How is the INR exchange rate decided?
The Indian rupee floats with managed intervention. Daily supply and demand from trade, foreign investors, and remittances set the rate, with the RBI stepping in to smooth large swings. Major drivers include oil prices, US Federal Reserve interest rates, and FII inflows into Indian equities.
▶Is the rate the same for cash, card, and wire transfer?
No. Cash usually gets the worst rate, debit and credit cards add 1 to 3.5 percent as a foreign transaction fee plus the network's rate, and wire transfers via SWIFT use the interbank rate but add a flat fee of ₹500 to ₹1,500. Multi-currency forex cards or services like Wise typically offer the most competitive rates for travellers.
▶Does the calculator use live rates?
It fetches once when the page loads, from the free open.er-api.com daily reference feed (INR base). The timestamp under the Convert card shows exactly when the rates were last updated. Hit Refresh to pull again. This is a daily reference feed, not a millisecond-live trading feed : for real transactions, check the rate on your bank's portal, RBI's reference rate page, or a forex aggregator. If the fetch fails (offline, blocked, or the API is down), the calculator falls back to a set of baked-in rates so it still works.
