Multiplying decimals by whole numbers and powers of 10
These two cases set up the general rule.
Idea
Decimal × whole number. Treat the decimal as a whole number (ignore the point), multiply, then place the decimal point so that the result has the same number of decimal places as the original decimal.

Decimal × power of . Move the decimal point to the right by as many places as the power of :

If the original decimal does not have enough decimal places, append zeros as needed: (point shifted past existing digits).
This shortcut works because multiplying by shifts every digit one column to the left , equivalently, the decimal point one column to the right.
