Recap of integers
The integers are the set . They are the whole numbers extended to the negatives.
Idea
Integers stretch infinitely in both directions on the number line. Negatives sit to the left of ; positives to the right.
Comparing. On the number line, a number further to the right is greater. So , even though . (Negative signs reverse the size order.)
Adding.
- Same sign: add absolute values, keep the sign. . .
- Different signs: subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger; take the sign of the larger. (because and has larger magnitude).

Absolute value. is the distance from to , always non-negative. So and .
Real-life integers. Temperatures (C in Shimla in January), bank balances ( means owed), elevations ( m below sea level), sports scores (a "" handicap), etc.
