Chapter 1: Large Numbers Around Us

How many people live in your city? How many grains of rice fit in a sack? How many seconds will pass before your next birthday? The answers are not small numbers like 55 or 4040 , they can run into lakhs, crores, or even billions. This chapter helps you become friends with these very large numbers.

You will learn two systems used side by side in India , the Indian system (with lakhs and crores) and the international system (with millions and billions). Both rest on the same idea: every digit has a place value, and every step to the left multiplies that value by ten. Once you spot that pattern, even a number like 1,23,45,67,8901{,}23{,}45{,}67{,}890 stops looking scary.

We will also practise reading newspaper-style numbers, comparing them, and estimating. Estimation is the art of getting "close enough" without doing the whole calculation. If a stadium says 80,00080{,}000 tickets were sold and a city has 11 crore people, what fraction is that? You will be able to answer in seconds by the end of this chapter.

Finally, you will see why writing 7,00,00,0007{,}00{,}00{,}000 or 7×1077 \times 10^7 is often easier than counting zeros. Large numbers are everywhere , in budgets, in distances to the Sun, in the population of a country , and a young pattern-hunter should know how to handle them.
