Chapter 6: Vegetable Farm

Welcome to the vegetable farm! Red tomatoes, purple brinjals, green ladyfingers , everywhere you look, there are vegetables to count. Today we add and take away with bigger numbers up to 20.

What we'll do in this chapter

• Add numbers whose answer is up to 20.
• Subtract numbers up to 20.
• Solve little farm stories: how many tomatoes did we pick?
• Find missing numbers in simple "how many more" puzzles.

The big idea

Now that we know numbers up to 20, we can add and subtract bigger groups.

If the farmer picks 8 brinjals in the morning and 6 brinjals in the evening, how many brinjals did he pick in all? 8 + 6 = 14 brinjals!

If there are 15 tomatoes in a basket and 4 fall down, how many are still in the basket? 15 − 4 = 11 tomatoes.

We use the same trick , count on our fingers, draw small circles, or use sticks. With practice, the answers come faster and faster.

Sometimes we already know the answer and we need to find the missing piece. "I had some ladyfingers. I bought 5 more. Now I have 12. How many did I start with?" That is 12 − 5 = 7 ladyfingers. Maths is like a little detective game.

🍅 Tomato Basket

Take 10 small stones (your tomatoes!). Add 5 more. Count , how many in all? Now remove 3. How many now? Talk about each step out loud.

🥕 Farm Story Game

Make up your own farm story. Example: "I picked 7 carrots and my friend picked 6 carrots. Together we have ___." Fill in the answer. Try a new story each day!

🎲 Roll and Add

Roll two dice (or use any two cards with dots). Add the two numbers. Try to roll the biggest total you can! Can you reach 12?

🥒 Missing Vegetables

Hide some vegetables (or buttons) under a cloth. Say "I had 14. There are 9 still here. How many under the cloth?" Lift the cloth and check!

A small story

Dadaji ran a small vegetable farm. On Monday he picked 12 ladyfingers. On Tuesday he picked 7 more. "How many in two days?" he asked Sunny. Sunny thought , 12 + 7 = 19 ladyfingers! Then dadi cooked some for dinner. She used 6. "How many left for tomorrow?" Sunny answered , 19 − 6 = 13 ladyfingers. Dadaji clapped, "My little maths farmer!"
