Chapter 3: Mango Treat

Aam! Aam! Aam! The mango tree is full of yellow mangoes! Today we will count them, one by one. Get ready to meet our new friends , the numbers from 1 to 9.

What we'll do in this chapter

• Count things from 1 to 9.
• Learn the names of these numbers , one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
• Learn to write the digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
• Tell which group has more mangoes.

The big idea

Numbers help us count. When mother gives you mangoes, you can say "I have 3 mangoes!" and everybody understands.

We start with 1. Then 2, then 3, all the way up to 9. Each time we add one more, the number gets bigger.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Try saying them out loud! That is the counting song.

We also learn to write each number. The number 1 is a tall line. The number 2 is like a swan. The number 8 has two round circles, one on top of the other. Each digit has its own special shape.

When you see 5 mangoes and 3 mangoes, you can say 5 is more than 3. And 3 is less than 5. Numbers help us compare!

🥭 Mango Count

Take 5 small balls (or stones, or rajma seeds). Pretend they are mangoes. Pick them up one by one and say "One mango, two mangoes, three mangoes…" Now ask someone to give you 7 of them. Can you count them out?

✋ Show Me Your Fingers

Ask someone to call out a number from 1 to 9. Quickly show that many fingers! Try 4. Try 7. Try 9 , that needs all the fingers on one hand and four on the other!

📝 Number Tracing

Write the numbers 1 to 9 in your notebook. Trace each one slowly. Say its name as you write , "this is five!"

🎯 More or Less Game

Drop 6 buttons on a plate. Drop 3 buttons on another. Look quickly , which plate has more? Now mix them up and try again with different numbers!

A small story

Anu's grandmother had 9 mangoes in a basket. Anu's cousin came home. Grandmother gave 4 mangoes to Anu and 4 mangoes to the cousin. There was 1 mango left in the basket. Grandmother said, "This one is for me!" Everyone laughed and ate together.

4. Draw 4 stars in your notebook.
5. Say the numbers from 1 to 9 backwards. (Try: 9, 8, 7, 6 …)
